Divine Fallacy, a metalcore band from upstate New York, recently released an emotional song called “You & Me”, and a music video to go with it. To be honest, I am new to this band, but after hearing this song and diving into their catalog, I am now hooked. Yes, I have found another awesome band to follow! Come, join me on a look inside Divine Fallacy and their new song and video.

Based in both Rochester and Buffalo, New York, the members of Divine Fallacy include: Chris Miller (Vocals); Josh Simmonds (Vocals); Joe Syracusa (Guitar); Ron Ward, Jr. (Guitar); Jimmy Sacco (Bass); and John Murch (Drums). The band was kind enough to get together and give me great background and answer questions I had.
Divine Fallacy got started back in 2018, when Chris left a previous band with a vision in mind. He and drummer John Murch cycled through some band members, and released an EP called No Love Lost, as well as some singles. A couple of the “OG” members eventually moved on – guitarist Tyler Lincoln (who is now with a great band called Inverity) and guitarist/vocalist Michael Steves. The lineup evolved, and Josh Simmonds, who has known Chris for decades, was added on vocals, along with Joe Syracusa on guitar and Jimmy Sacco on bass. This group has been writing and recording together since this past fall.

Chris and John brainstormed and came up with the band’s name together. The term “Divine Fallacy” essentially means a fallacy that occurs when someone assumes something false because it contradicts their personal beliefs. For the band, this is not a religious thing. This is more of a statement about how passionate they are about what they do. The band told me, “We write what we believe, what we feel, and about what experiences we’ve had in life. The name of the band defines what we really do, lyrically.”

The songwriting process for Divine Fallacy is a collaborative effort. The whole band contributes on varying levels depending on the song, The band described it this way: “We mostly write virtually and remotely, passing ideas back and forth through technology, until we have the base of a song. Once we feel good about what we have, it goes out to our producer, Justin DeBlieck, and he takes the lead on the project from there. Chris and Josh write lyrics together. Most of the true magic with these songs happens while we’re in the studio actually recording.”
The latest single, “You & Me”, was produced, engineered, and mixed by Justin “JD” DeBlieck, and mastered by Steve Sopchak of The Square Studio. Chris and Josh came up with the concept for the music video and built the set. The video was directed by Tyler White of Red Owl Media.
Like most bands, the members of Divine Fallacy want their listeners to find their own meaning in the songs. However, “You & Me” is very special to the band and they were very willing to share the story behind it. “We aren’t incredibly shy about THIS song being written about struggles with addiction,” they told me. Josh didn’t actually write the lyrics for “You & Me” – it was already in production when he joined the band. So he had to build his own connection to the song before he went into the studio.

Lyrically, there are a couple different perspectives. For Chris, his point of view in the song is about having seen people he loves battle addiction. For Josh, though he had been through similar experiences in his world, he didn’t have any crazy struggles. He shared with me that he did have some challenges of his own he had to overcome a couple years ago. “When I sing the song, it’s almost like it’s that memory of ‘Me Versus Me’ as opposed to a real ‘You’ in the scenario. By the time we completed the process, this song felt every bit as much mine as any song I’ve ever written. That’s the power of the emotion behind it.”
“We really believe in this song,” the band said. “The whole band has had an addiction touch each of our lives in some way, shape, or form, and we believe it’s important to bring it up as much as we can. If we can make just one person think about making a different decision before it’s too late, we have a rare win, and that is important.” There are so many people who carry the burden and people in their lives don’t see what’s beneath the surface. This is a topic that is near and dear to all of the members of Divine Fallacy.
When I listened to “You & Me” for the first time, I was honestly awestruck. The combination of the clean and hard vocals, with some rapping sprinkled in, is perfection. The masterful riffs of the dual guitars, thick bass lines, and the blast of the drums make this song a perfect specimen of one of my favorite genres of music, metalcore. There is a wicked breakdown in the middle of the song, too.
Not only is this song stellar musically, but it is definitely one that sweeps you away in the emotions and makes you ponder the choices you make in your life and how they affect those around you. As for the music video, it is very energetic and shows the passion the band has for not only “You & Me”, but for their music in general. It makes me want to try to catch a Divine Fallacy show sometime – preferably as soon as possible. I am certain I would leave fulfilled and energized.

2025 is shaping up to be a great year for Divine Fallacy. Their live debut with the current lineup will be at Frostfest 2025, which is organized by Frostbelt Entertainment and will be held May 3rd in Buffalo. The band has big plans for other live shows in 2025, and we’ll start hearing about those soon. There is another new single nearing completion, and they are looking to get back into the studio for yet another song this summer.
